In San Diego's climate, a lawn is a real decision. Natural grass needs regular water and mowing; artificial turf needs neither, but costs more up front. Neither is wrong, and the right answer depends on how you use the yard.
Natural sod is cooler underfoot on hot afternoons, feels and smells like a real lawn, and costs less to install. It works best where it gets sun, where you're willing to water efficiently, and where a smart irrigation controller can keep usage reasonable through the dry months.
Synthetic turf makes sense for dogs, play areas, shady spots where grass won't grow, and homeowners who want a green yard with almost no maintenance. The difference between good turf and bad turf is the base underneath: excavation, compacted crushed rock, weed barrier, and proper drainage so it stays flat and doesn't hold odors.
Many of our clients use both: synthetic turf in the high-traffic backyard and drought-tolerant planting out front. Whatever you choose, we'll convert or adjust your irrigation so you aren't watering anything that doesn't need it.
